Question by Bill: What do you think about buying this used car? 1990 Grand Prix?
I am capable of buyng a new and/or late model car, but after years of financial education I have learned it is smarter to pay cash for a quality used, cheap car.

I found a 1990 Grand Prix with the 3.1 V6 at a local big-name Toyota dealer, on their used car lot. Usually a dealer will not sell such an old car on their lot, but this car is immaculate. 70,000 miles, and the leather interior looks brand new. All options work (cruise, a/c, etc) and the power windows have strong motors in them. The car is one-owner and car-fax certified. Prev. owner put new struts in it before he traded it in. The dealer did some preventative maintenance, and this is where I have my questions. Of course it’s used so it will need something, the dealer replaced the oil pump, water pump, trans pan gasket, and rear brakes. Being a big name celebrity owned dealership, they said they liked the car enough not to auction it, but put a little work in it and sell it.

The private party book on the car is $ 2400 in excellent shape. They are asking $ 3800, I haggeled them down to $ 3000 and said I would sleep on it. I am hoping they call back with a better offer. They want over book because they put the work into it, and said that such an exceptionally clean 20 yo car is worth a bit over book, as book is a “guideline”.

I like the car, but I don’t want to make an “emotional” purchase. I’ve owned 3 early 90′s GM cars in the past and they were pretty good to me, especially the older style 3.1 V6.

Question by kent: Do I need licenses to start selling used cars?
I don’t want to make a used car lot or anything- just buy cars for cheap at auctions, work on them myself, then try and sell them online for profit. Nothing huge- maybe two or three cars at a time.

I live in California. I hope to make this my full time job.

you won’t need a license to sell 2-3 cars at a time, but you will need a license to buy cars at an auction.

I’m 19 and I’ve been looking for a car for months! I’ve saved enough that i have about 2600 to spend on a car. I’ve been searching craigslist, but it’s hard to trust and often doesn’t give much info. I’ve also been to the south Chicago auto auction..but I’ve read bad reviews about getting cars from there, and they don’t have much in my price range. Ebay motors seems to be overpriced for what they have. I feel like dealerships are the next best option, but i don’t really know of any. Help? Suggestions?

I prefer a small suv..but I’m opening my options just to have transportation before my mom kills me!
