British sports cars challenge – Top Gear – BBC

Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May take to the track in their classic British sports cars as they go head-to-head in a race. But can any of them post a faster lap time than the Stig in a very unsporty and rather French Peugeot 205? Fantastic high definition clip from the award-winning motoring show. @ZILOGz80VIDEOS It’s good to see the Big 3 looking back at their past to invent new cars, the problem is many can’t afford a Dodge Charger Daytona, Dodge Challenger SRT8 392, Chevy Camaro SS, Shelby Mustang GT500. And we wasted our fuel in the ’90s on gas guzzling SUVs instead of bold, brash muscle cars.

@ZILOGz80VIDEOS What I meant to say is you’d WANT the ’65 Aston Martin DB5, but many can’t afford a vintage Aston. Many don’t want to buy the crummy, underpowered hatch, but it’s all they can afford. The roads would be littered with classy Brit and Yank cars if the clock was turned back to a time when people could afford them, but reliability was improved.

@ZILOGz80VIDEOS Back in the early ’90s, he loved the mark 1 Golf GTI and he compared the Peugeot 206 GTI as being practical and more fun than a Ferrari. What he failed to explain is hot hatches would be more commonplace than old cars because they need more maintenance and repairs than a newer car, which is never cheap. But, the old car was never cheap to begin with.

@betatalk357 my dad had a the 1974 mgb (not the one with the rubber bumpers), I very much like British sports cars, and I’m not being patriotic either, because I live in America.

@betatalk357 I never said that, I like old British sports cars a lot, it’s just sort of funny how much he got caught up in the hot hatch fad.

@ZILOGz80VIDEOS The only sad thing about it, which is a sin, was that the cars were too unreliable for many to last. But the ones who have stood the test of time serves as a reminder that Brits and Yanks can make good things, and if given a chance to improve reliability, can make the finest cars for a reasonable price once again. The economy wouldn’t suffer and people would be able to make a living once again.

@ZILOGz80VIDEOS And they were built by happy hard working people you knew from the neighborhood. You bought one to support their families. At the end of that show, in the old TVR factory, when they rewind the clock and you see a lot of beautiful, vintage Brit cars. Now, sit there and try to tell me you’d rather want a ’96 crummy french hatchback 206 GRD than a ’65 Aston Martin DB5.

@ZILOGz80VIDEOS You missed the point of the British Sports Car Challenge. Yes, there’s been times when Jeremy said British and American cars were crap. Many car makers closed shop because of poor selling unreliable cars as people bought small, practical, cheap hatchbacks. But looking back at the past, a Brit or Yank car with a few flaws was still better than a cheap hatchback because it had some passion, flair, pizzazz, grunt.

i love the look of the older british sports cars
    the bodies are just sexy
    the rear quarter panels especially
the same reason i love the only american pony cars
they were in the era of power and grunt
except the british made a faster track car thats nimble and quick
us americans made a car that will go fast
have room for you wife and kids and a small dog
and kill them all as soon as you try and follow the brits car around a corner

    still would want a gt390

Somehow, my internal lie detectors started going berserk the moment Jeremy said “superb Jensen Healey” and kept that way until after the video. Anyone else get that?

the weird thing is that Jeremy Clarkson actually said cars like the MG B were, in essence, crap on the new romantics episode of Clarkson’s car years.

the problem with the comparitive lap times when the stig does a lap is that the Stig is a far better driver then Jeremy James and Richard. So of course his lap will always be faster.
