It all depends on where they got it. Some cars they pick up that have been abandoned. Some the owners were hauled off to jail etc and the cars were impounded and never retrieved. The one my daughter and I went to, you could not start the car but only look at the engine and the body, tires etc. We bid on a VW Rabbit and got it for $ 200. It ran good and later we discovered it had all sorts of tools, etc in the back. Whoever owned it, lived out of their car. It was amazing how much was in that little car. She drove it for several years. Sometimes you luck out and some times you don’t.

Its good and bad. its good because they are up to date on the maintenance 90% of the time…. the bad is that the people that drove them probably beat the shit out of them…. i would go more for the repo cars…. that’s the best deal!
Go and check them out. Some are hardly used and some are used hard! The actual gov’t cars are usually bare bones no accessories. Used police cars are crap. Find a buddy or expert to take along to a sale.Attend in advance of the sale so U can inspect carefully including try everything out.
I’m very happy with my current car which I bought for a ridiculous price at a government car auction, but you do need to know how to choose the right auction.
I used this service and was very satisfied with it: http://best-offers-online.com/gov-auctions
